After years of playing at home for no one, Steve Reeder is taking his brand of hard rock out to the world. Growing up in a military family and settling in rural central Florida as a teen, he was convinced there was no reconciliation between the hyper-masculine world of 80's heavy metal and the disco and drag dominating the gay scene.
"My older brothers got me hooked on KISS and Van Halen records (8-tracks too) in the late 1970's. It wasn't long before my collection was filled with bands such as Judas Priest, Ratt, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Kix, Cinderella, and AC/DC."
"About this time, puberty had fully set in and it dawned on me that there was a big difference between me and all the 'rocker dudes', both on TV and at school. They were all totally enthralled by football, cars and women. I was interested in the football coaches, Wrangler cowboy butts, and Matt Houston. Of course, this did not coalesce with the message I was getting on MTV: girls, girls, girls! There was no way I was gonna pull off fitting in that scene with any dignity or satisfaction. In the meantime, I come of age and go to the most readily available gay social outlet at the time: the bars. And it's just Madonna, Pet Shop boys, or anything indiscernible set to a looping 'thump-thump' beat. I just thought there was no hope."
"In the mid-1990's, an internet search brought me to an artist named Sid Spencer. The discovery of an openly gay country singer was both outrageous and very refreshing. If Sid could find an audience, then so could the hard rocking guys like me. I wouldn't be doing this if I hadn't found Sid Spencer."
Indeed the passage of time has opened up a new world. The outing of several mainstream rockers like Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford and Chuck Panozzo has opened the eyes of many. Now, in the age of the internet, gay rockers can easily connect with the likes of Pansy Division and Jinx Titanic. Add to that mix Steve Reeder. Drawing on lifelong influences such as KISS, AC/DC, Rolling Stones and Motley Crue, Steve is going to bring new life and meaning to 'cock rock.'
Steve Reeder! Steve Reeder!
(coming all over you in September!)
